Sam,
This was really difficult to write....maybe because you are an awesome builder & just a really nice guy! Hope it is not too verbose, maybe we should get Kelly to edit it so you don't get a big head!
We need to have you'll over for dinner. Let me know when you are free.
We met Sam McCullough through a realtor that was helping us find an existing home. We decided to buy a lot and build instead. Sam was involved from the very beginning, helping us decide where to place the eventual home to take advantage of the views. His expertise helped us through the architectural phase, so we felt confident in what the final product would look like. He recommended suppliers that were knowledgeable & made the selection process go swiftly. Since we lived in Texas, Sam communicated frequently. He called, emailed, & sent us photos regularly. If any questions arose he was in contact and concerns were readily resolved. He was upfront with costs. He sent us multiple bids if he felt one was better than another, but he never compromised on the quality of the subcontractors he used. We meet several of the subs and they were competent and thorough and did amazing work. His knowledge of the construction business & attention to details ensured that our home was exactly what we wanted. We have recommended Sam to others looking to build in the Durango area and would be delighted to share our experiences of the process.

My wife and I have known Sam for many years, and when the opportunity came up to build an in-town home we chose him as our builder. The home is completely custom, and is Energy Star certified and zero-energy designed. Sam worked closely with us through the design phase to ensure that we understood the financial and engineering ramifications of very decision we made - and there were a lot of decisions.
During construction, we were in constant (almost daily) communication with Sam. He uses local subcontractors that he has worked with for many years, so they understand how to work together. That said, Sam is first and foremost an advocate for the client and ensures that their needs always come first. Sam stays on time and on budget. He clearly communicates when things are not going to plan, and works with you to address any unforeseen issues.
We have been in our house for 18 months now, and are very happy with it. Sam was always available for questions or issues even well after the move-in. We would build again with The McCullough Group.

“This is a builder who doesn’t try to push his style ideas on you, and one you can trust to listen and accurately interpret what you really want. He was just great to work with the whole way through”. “The amazing thing was we finished ahead of schedule, even after all the changes we made”

To Whom it Concern:
“First, that is awesome news on the budget. The amount you got this done for is amazing! And again, we are totally happy with how everything turned out!”
This letter serves as our professional reference for Sam McCullough and the McCullough group. We hired Sam to completely renovate a mountain cabin at Lake Purgatory. The cabin was in very poor shape and had essentially been abandoned for more than 2 years. It was only with Sam’s creative vision and impeccable construction acumen that this project was ever completed. On top of that, all facets of the job were completed either at or better than what was initially budgeted. I would highly recommend using the McCullough group as contractor for any complex, total home renovation projects for the following reasons:

Hi Sam, I don’t mind at all giving you a little positive testimony on our working together to build our house in Durango.
We actually met through my phoning you after seeing one of your signs that said you would build as required on a site another of your clients had. It turned out your client didn’t want to sell the lot but we met and discussed the concept Dorothy & I wanted to use to build a new house. You visited our existing house and we spent a lot of time together and you ended up understanding what I thought I wanted and how that fit into what you could do.
We discussed many of the details and you secured a home designer and had the designer put things down on paper. After some changes we decided to go ahead after which I required some very difficult reworking to accommodate a 2nd floor tower to be able to look over the Animas River and the purple cliffs, with an elevator and inside stairway. I know that you personally spent a tremendous amount of time after reviewing my rough sketch and I think that was the point I knew I selected the right contractor.
Since the tower made the hallway much longer than initially, I really needed the hallway to be wider than as designed and you were very cooperative in moving walls, etc to accommodate the wider hall. You also will recall that one feature of previous McCullough homes was the curved wood beams in the ceiling of the family room, which I wanted badly, and this required you and I to work very closely to get the lower ceiling beams of the entry to properly visually tie into the larger family room beams.
There was also a considerable effort you put into incorporating the stained glass windows into the stone wall separating the entry and hallways from the family room and installing the stained glass windows in the stairway to the lower level. All in all, Sam. This is a unique feature and you spent tremendous time and effort in understanding my ideas and making the final result excellent. There were other special rooms such as the screened porch that came out very well as a result of your efforts and ingenuity.
You were always aware of budget restraints and together we chose most components and detailing that were good quality and design that reduced the costs greatly compared to a contractor that simply chose materials and components by brand names that the clients would know and accept. This applied to hardware, cabinets, trim, doors and most components. While our house was not cheap, I feel together we saved hundreds of thousand of dollars this way. The house was completed several months ahead of schedule.
I believe your contractors like to work with you because despite you being very demanding, they know exactly what is required and know they will be paid the right amount on time. There were only a couple of subs such as the bathroom tile setter that were slow to follow through after construction was completed where details needed to be corrected. We have a spectacular heating and cooling system provided by Trane that unfortunately I believe Trane did not furnish the HVAC contractor with enough information for a proper installation. And because we are not at the house most of the time it took a long time to really make work properly. I was very pleased you stuck with the problems until they were solved.
Of course I was not in town during most of the construction but would appear periodically and criticize or complain and Sam and I still managed to be on the same page most of the time and get excellent results. I do believe this was caused by Sam looking at the product and deciding if it was satisfactory or needed some changes as if it was his house, which allowed us to work together very well. Also, the accounting and billing was very well arranged and allowed for virtually no problems in making periodic payments.
All in all, we have an excellent house and Sam McCullough still is willing to help me with problems as they develop and assists greatly with them personally as well as making sure the sub contractors also respond.
I would definitely have the McCullough Group and Sam McCullough build another house or commercial building for me and I consider that I made a good friend in Sam and his family. My experience was excellent.

This letter is intended as a professional reference for the The McCullough Group and for Sam McCullough. I highly recommend Sam as a prime contractor for large construction projects for the following reasons:
- Sam was always on time for any meetings we had associated with the project and demonstrated flexibility to meet with me at my convenience;
- The work on the Ecosphere building was completed at nearly $15,000 under budget. Related, Sam was always proactive to keep me apprised of budget status and project timelines. He was also very good acquiring multiple subcontractor bids and clearly explained the differences in subcontractor approaches and costs and made sound recommendations regarding subcontractor selection.
- Throughout the building process Sam continually found ways to cut costs based on more efficient and cost effective materials then the architectural plans reflected while still achieving the same look and quality in the end. He readily provided a variety of materials samples (bricks, paint samples, plaster textures, etc.) for my consideration prior to their being installed.
- The project was completed in 8 weeks allowing me to move my staff into the renovated space 2 months ahead of our original schedule;
- Our contract was based on cost plus billing and was always very transparent. There were no unrealistically low allowances or contingencies.
I strongly recommend Sam and The McCullough Group for your building needs. Please feel free to contact me directly with any particular questions you may have.
